For a one-runway airport, this means you need a loop. Both of them are treated as one way roads, so you'll need a runway directed towards a taxiway that leads to a terminal, and then have a taxiway that leads from that terminal to a runway that has sufficient length for a plane to roll along for a bit (otherwise you get planes that lift off at 85 degrees). Having runways and taxiways being used properly is a very sucky experience. So I used a stock terminal to make a half-assed rural airport. I remember reading that you need one vanilla terminal first to have planes spawn, but once you have that you can use custom terminals connected to airport roads runways/taxiways and it'll work.
